Elon Musk’s X Corp Fails to Win Lawsuit Against Hate Speech Watchdog
(Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Monday dismissed X Corp’s lawsuit against a nonprofit group that has criticized the rise of hate speech on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter since Elon Musk took it over.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco granted the dismissal request by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, saying Musk appeared to have targeted the nonprofit because he didn’t like what it stood for.
“It is impossible to read the complaint and not conclude that X Corp is far more concerned with CCDH’s speech than with its data collection methods,” Breyer wrote in the 52-page decision.
X had sued the nonprofit last July, saying it violated its user agreement by improperly scraping and extracting data to create false and misleading reports that Musk allowed X to become a haven for hate speech, extremism and other misinformation.
According to the complaint, the nonprofit’s “scare campaign” was designed to drive away advertisers and caused tens of millions of dollars in damages.
X’s lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lawyers for the Digital Hate Center had no immediate comment.
